When my son became a toddler, I knew I have to find a school that would suit his personality and needs. I have read many articles and blogs about parents looking for best school. And, like them, I too, scouted for schools.  Well, I should say it is true, that when you become a parent you would want the best things for your child. But, what is really the best for your child?

Each parent has their own factors when choosing the best school for their child. Choosing a high-end school doesn’t mean your child will be happy. Choosing traditional ones doesn’t mean your child will not learn properly. My point really is that parents and child would know when they visit the place if that school is the right for them. When you sit in the trial classes, observing, questioning, you would know in your heart that you are in the right place.

Before, I have booked for a trial class for my child. I went to this super-high-tuition-fee-rate school and went home with many “buts” in my thoughts. My child attended a free one-week trial class but on the third day I know in my heart the place isn’t it. So, how did I end up with my son’s current school?

Easy-peasy! I have the following factors that I really have to consider. Then, my hubby and I checked the schools we liked one by one. I don’t have to go with the flow as to where my friends enrolled their children. As long as I have my rules, my guides, then I just have to stick with them.

Location: Even if we find a perfect one but the location is like more than 3 kilometers from our home, I knew we have to drop it. Both of us are working, we have a nanny but we don’t trust to take our son by the nanny if it’s like more than 3 kms! We have my son’s granddad who takes him to/from school every single day. So, the nearness o the school is really convenient for everyone. J

Quality: Good thing in our city, we have a lot of good standard preschools. Student to teacher ratio is very low. Student passing rate to big school is 100%. I have interviewed parents and nannies in my child’s school, the siblings of my son’s classmates all went to this preschool and now they are studying in prominent schools. The reason why they enrolled their younger ones here is because it’s a mix of progressive and traditional teachings and the school’s ambiance is just like the little ones are in their home’s backyard.

Rate:    Well, I was surprised that tuition fees are as high as when you were studying to college. So, I just thought that as long as my child learns, I wouldn’t mind. But still, money is money. I want to make sure we are investing in the right school. Progressive schools are pretty much with almost the same rates. I have inquired 3 schools and they have almost the same rate, except of course if we opted for Montessori ones, then it would be higher.

Environment: Classrooms must be attractive. At my son's age, he is easily distracted. He's not always on focus. The teaching area must be catchy so that my son will stay attentive. The play area should be safe and clean. Lots of greens, plants, some trees. The place is child-friendly. I know in my heart my son loves the school :)

How did I learn about this school? It was summer when I saw a flyer sitting on our garage floor. I told myself, wow it’s just 700 meters away! So I inquired the summer readiness program for my son and men! He surely liked the school! And, I did too! The next day, I told my husband to report late for work and check out the school, he liked it too. I also like the program. They have Academics, Baking, Play time and Circle time with other senior students. The play area has shelves full of books and I’m a book lover!  My son was very happy and he learned many tricks, words and letters. Though the rate is at the ceiling of our budget for nursery school, the end result was enrolling him. I know we made the right decision!
